I think that there are a number of reasons that the same public status would difficult to achieve. However whether 'superstar' polymath status - or Renaissance Man even as Leonardo, of course, would exemplify - is achievable to the extent that one would be remembered some centuries later in the same bracket as Leonardo and Franklin: that I would doubt. I certainly think that polymath status is achievable - and would offer Jonathan Miller as an example. Were these men truly amazing by modern standards or are the modern polymaths just getting drowned out by billions of other humans? Was da Vinci truly amazing by the amount of knowledge he amassed or was it only because we have an abundance of knowledge now that no single person can be called an expert in all those fields?

In da Vinci's case, I don't know the depth of knowledge he achieved in each field but assuming there was less agreed upon scientific knowledge back then than there is now, it seems as though no one will ever be comparable simply because they won't be able to achieve those descriptors. In Franklin's case, was it easier to become a scientist, politician and diplomat in the same lifetime in his time? What would it take in this day and age to have a wikipedia article written about someone with those exact same descriptors? Would they be as famous as Franklin? The wikipedia article for Franklin says he wasР”Р„ leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat.Р”Р„reas of interest included invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history, and cartography.
